Fitness Tips for the Single Mother

August 10, 2015 by sumi Leave a Comment

A little while ago, a came across an article on how the single mother can live richly on a single income. Which led me to think, I ought to write a few fitness tips for the single mother, and how she can find quality time for some exercise, despite her busy schedule.

What makes me qualified?

Other than being a single mother, and working full time between several gyms, and online, there’s more….

In my situation, the father isn’t (currently) in the same state, which means that the standard visitation privileges that would free up some of my time isn’t there.

In most situations, the mother will have a night off during the week, and alternating weekends, etc, so that would theoretically allow for some free time for the single mother to fit in fitness.

That’s not my case. You could say I have LESS free time, not more than the average single mother where the father or partner is there to help out.

So, my tips below are really not just for the single mother (or even father!) in a more traditional set-up, but also for the single mother who may literally never get a parenting break (unless she has the financial means to hire nannies, or babysitters).

I also do work full-time. Granted, my job is active (I’m a full time personal trainer), I’m highly motivated to stay in shape, but unless I schedule or make time for my own training, it wouldn’t get done.

So, what are my fitness tips for the  single mother who is trying to find time for fitness?

1. Reframe your mindset regarding the exercise time commitment. Realistically, you may not have 30-45 at a stretch to exercise. You can break your workouts in to shorter chunks of time. A 15 minute walk during your lunch break, a brief stroll in the evening, parking as far away from your destination as possible, walking up and down steps, etc. It ALL adds up.

You can check out all my sneaky tips to squeeze in activity here.

2. Find ways to exercise with your baby. Google “mommy and me” fitness classes in your area, fitness classes that allow you to work out with your baby in the stroller, or recreation centers, studios, and gyms that offer childcare services on site so you can bring your child to the gym while you train.

Many of my own personal training clients will bring their kids to my home gym studio. Depending on the age, we’ve done workouts while holding the baby or while the baby watches from a safe distance; or workout close enough to a clingy toddler so the tot can watch and admire the mother training.

Usually, if the child is old enough to be entertained with toys and games for a brief 30 minute workout, everything goes seamlessly. I don’t mind at all when my clients bring their child to my home for the workout. This isn’t really an option in a commercial gym unless they have childcare. You might be able to find a neighborhood personal trainer that lets you bring your child, or comes to you.

Need a playground workout? Something you can do while the kids play?

Here’s one for you to try, too:

Sign up you and your child for fun family runs, easy obstacle/mud runs, 5Ks, 1Ks, etc. This is a great way for both of you to get in some exercise.

If you are truly limited to at home training only, you can check out my tips for training at home or purchase my complete program for cardio, nutrition, and strength training at home called Stay At Home Strong. The workouts are short, ideal for busy parents, and meant to be completed in the privacy of your own home.

3. Find another single mother in your neighborhood that you can alternate drop-off playdates with. Naturally, this doesn’t have to be a single mom, but I’ve generally connected with other single moms in a special way. Another single mom and I will take turns watching the kids a few times every month so we can have some “me time.” I use that time to exercise, clean up, cook, whatever. Bottom line is that you’ve opened up another outlet for alone time that you can use to your advantage. If you need to find other single moms, try your neighborhood Facebook mom groups (if they’re trusty worthy), chat up the other moms on the birthday party circuit, or at school, etc.

4. Use every birthday party drop-off situation to your advantage. This tip won’t apply if your child is too young, but once your child is in kindergarten, you can leave him or her at birthday parties instead of staying. I actually did not know this until I hosted a birthday party and parents would leave their child, and pick them up after the party was over.

Happy 7th Birthday!

Make sure you get a cupcake.

Seriously, no one told me so I had no clue this happened, or was acceptable.

It’s actually great, all the host has to do is worry about entertaining the kid rather than the parent. To be on the safe side, you will want to ask if parents are required to stay; sometimes the invite will specify it’s a drop off party. This is seriously one of the best things ever about transitioning your child to kindergarten. Free time is a luxury for me, so I take every opportunity I can get.

Again, use that time to get in a longer workout, a hike/run in a new neighborhood, or whatever.

5. Exercise during their soccer, football, cheer, martial arts, dance class, tutoring, piano practice etc. Usually, I witness moms and dads hanging out at the sidelines, on the benches or chairs, catching up on email, chatting with other parents, texting on their phones, reading a book, etc., while their child is in class/practicing a sport. That’s perfectly fine.

But if you’re a single parent with a kid that’s old enough to be left with the coach or tutor, and your presence isn’t required, use that time to walk, run, hit the gym if possible, do some bodyweight exercises like those shown in the playground workout video I posted earlier. Or throw some resistance bands in your car and do this workout, which can be done in 15 minutes or less:

I’ve dragged many a friendly mother out for a walk with me while my child was in class or practice. Again, if you are a single mom with limited resources to help you so you can get some time to exercise, you’ll need to milk every opportunity you can get.

6. Enlist help, paid or unpaid. And always, always ask for help if you need it. Never, ever wait until your at your wits’ end to take a break.

I’m lucky that my parents will visit from abroad and stay with me for several months. I also have a brother and a close friend in the city who adore and care for my daughter, and help whenever they can.

Although it took me a very long time to warm up to the idea of having a sitter, finding a local teenager in your neighborhood that you trust is key to freeing up some of your time.

Otherwise, if you do have siblings, family, or close friends that are willing to take care of your child so that you can get away for a little bit to recharge (whether it’s for exercise, or not) remember to ask for help. A stronger, healthier mom is a happier mom; better equipped to deal with the unique stresses of single parenting.

Mom Strong Strong Success Story

April 20, 2015 by sumi Leave a Comment

I’ve known Kellie for several years from when I used to live in Florida almost 10 years ago. Our dogs and our little babies used to play together! Kellie is a stay-at-home mother to two young children Analise, 7, and Ryan, 5. I was thrilled when pretty much out of the blue, and after many, many years, Kellie purchased by book Mom Strong and also contacted me for online coaching.

Stay At Home Strong Success Story

Kellie’s Before and After Transformation

Mom Strong is a complete program I offer that is:

 • A 12-week post-pregnancy weight loss program to help you burn the baby fat and build lean sexy muscle.
 • Ideal for post-partum moms, stay at home moms, or any mom short on time.
 • A guided, step-by-step program that will help you achieve the same results that Kellie achieved here.

Stay At Home Strong Success Story

Stay At Home Strong Success Story

On this program Kellie lost 18 lbs (she went from 162.8 lbs to 144.6 lbs from mid-November of 2014-April 2015). Keep in mind that loss was over the Holiday season (when most people gain weight), that she’s a mother of 2 (she has a schedule, and a busy life), and that even though her progress may be slow by some standards, she consistently made progress.

And forget the scale for just a second- she also lost 4 inches off her thighs, 3 inches off her waistline, and 4.7 inches from her hips. The pictures shown here speak volumes about her impressive transformation and progress.

Sumi: What made you decide to purchase Stay At Home Strong?

Kellie: I have always watched you over the years whether in person when we lived in Florida together, or through social media. You have always been positive and encouraging with your comments with others and with me. I was there when your little Shaila was born, and remember how dedicated you were to health and fitness then. I was proud to see you succeed in opening your own business with Shailafitness, very awesome! Not to mention we are friends! I knew I could trust and rely on you for success.

Sumi: I feel super lucky that you chose me, when the Internet is FULL of online diet and fitness coaches. To what did I owe the honor of helping you shed the post-baby weight after all these years?

Kellie: I didn’t have much trouble keeping healthy until the last year or two. I am going through some counseling and started packing on the pounds. I had never been that much over my ideal weight other than pregnancy, so I knew I needed some help getting back to my normal self. I had lost all drive that I used to have, and wanted to use the knowledge, experience, and support you could offer me. To me it was a no-brainer to pick you! Who else?

Sumi: You managed to achieve a beautiful transformation! Your admirers (including me!) want to know how you did it. Let’s start first with nutrition. What changes did you make there?

Kellie: I first used your suggestion to use myfitnesspal as a way to track what I was eating, and figure out portion sizes. I also learned I was eating way more fat and not enough protein by using this tool, and by what you recommended I should be eating, I was able to start understanding portion sizes and learning how to plan out meals to help benefit my weight loss.

Sumi: If you were to offer some similar nutrition 101 tips to another mother who wanted to shed some of the post-baby weight, what would you tell them?

Kellie: Get a list of low fat protein sources from Sumi and start incorporating them into every meal and snack. Making a meal plan is extremely helpful, even just using myfitnesspal, I can plug in my day’s meal in the morning so that I know what I will be eating for the rest of the day.

If hunger strikes, I know what snacks I have planned for the day, so I can go to them instead of grabbing the nearest food. Eating triple the protein was one of the biggest changes I made. When prepping family meals, you can add or subtract ingredients into your portion easily if you plan well. Get used to using measuring cups, measuring spoons, and a scale. You will need all of these to get used to portion sizes.

Sumi: Even back when we first met you struck me as someone with tremendous discipline and drive. I’m certain that helped as you made changes with your diet and lifestyle. What changes did you make that were particularly transformative?

Kellie: If I have a plan and a goal in mind, and people there who know about it, I feel like if I were to slack off or not do my best, then I would be disappointing not only myself, but them as well.

Also, I realized that I was worth all this work, because my kids are going to want me around for a while, and so do I!

Getting healthy and fit was as much for them as it is for me. I also made the decision to step back from a lot of things that were taking up my time and energy, such as clubs and groups I was a part of, but really had lost the passion for. My usual lazy time to watch TV in the evening became my strength training or bike cardio time. I was going to watch my shows anyway, so might as well grab a cup of coffee and get up and start lifting! Rest is important as well, and taking time to rest helped give me energy to do what needed to be done. I felt more organized and less scrambled.

Sumi: I always tell my clients to reward yourself with the mini milestones achieved. Did you do this, and what did you do?

Kellie: My most recent reward was I bought a new outfit. That felt good! It felt great trying on clothes I hadn’t been able to wear in years. I also have a box of clothes from 8 years ago in the garage I plan to open up when I get to my next goal. The physical changes, and measuring and tracking them also help visualize how much change has occurred, and watching that is a reward in itself to me.

Sumi: When you’re traveling and on the run, how did you manage to keep your nutritional needs together?

Kellie: Well, I have to admit there were days where my planning didn’t happen and I ended up having to eat out. But I didn’t fret about it too much, and would add an extra cardio session to help if I had the time.

Eating out in general came to a halt during this program. I would eat out as a free meal every once in a while, but cooking at home will yield the greatest results. One time on the road I was hungry, so we stopped at a Safeway and got some plain grilled boneless skinless chicken breast from the deli. Picked up some sweet and spicy mustard to dip it in and that tied me over until we got home.

I also know what times of the day I am most hungry and try to plan for that. For instance, I was going to keep doing chores until I had to leave to pick up my daughter from school, but decided to quit 5 minutes sooner so I could make a quick whey shake to drink on the road. That way when I got home, I didn’t zoom for the cupboards out of hunger.

Simple changes, can have huge results.

Sumi: You’re an incredibly smart woman, so I’m honored you chose me to guide you through this Stay At Home Strong transformation. What’s the benefit of hiring an online coach?

Kellie: Well, I am not a gym type of person, nor do I want to spend the money on it, and being able to do this from my home is awesome. My weekly e-mails gave me the motivation to be sure and stay on task. I knew Sumi would be checking in with me, so I didn’t want to let her down.

I also like being creative at home and integrating my lifestyle changes in everything I do, and with my family. As a result, my husband decided to make his own changes and lost 12 pounds! My kids have seen our dedication to healthy living, and have learned a lot just by association. Our nutrition has changed together, and we workout together too or tag team. That has helped tremendously.

Sumi: What’s next for you and your fitness goals?

Kellie: I would like to maintain what I have accomplished and possibly tone my core and lower body more. My weight may reduce more as a result, which is ok with me!

But most importantly, I just want to stay healthy, active, and strong.

Why I’m Named Shaila Fitness

November 5, 2014 by sumi Leave a Comment

Every now and then, a client will ask why I’ve named my fitness business Shaila Fitness.

Sumi Singh T-Shirt

After all, my name isn’t Shaila (it’s my daughters’) and to a complete stranger, Shaila Fitness certainly doesn’t sound tough, grueling, physically challenging, or even catchy.

But here’s what you might not know. The Hindi name Shaila has many meanings. Shaila loosely translates into “Stone/Mountain” and is also another name for the Goddess Parvati, also known as the Goddess of Power, Strength, and Confidence.

Sumi Singh Shaila Fitness

Our First “Mud Run”

As a mother and a female in the fitness industry, I couldn’t think of a better name that embodies my approach to health and wellness.  I absolutely want my clients feeling stronger and empowered, so they come back for more.  I owe it to my beautiful daughter to be the best I can be; strong and confident so that she, too, can realize her full potential.

The Shaila Fitness Website is Dedicated to my Daughter Shaila, Whose Name Means the Goddess of Power, Strength and Confidence

As I sit here today, reflecting on my daugher’s 7th birthday, I’m also reminded that good health is a gift. Being strong has enabled me to carry the load as a single mother (literally, and figuratively) when faced with challenges. I run, keep up, play, and enjoy every minute of being a mother. (Except when I’m sleep deprived, then I really just want sleep.)

Being fit has enabled me to share my love of exercise and movement with my daughter and clients.  Strength training is empowering in ways that translate outside the gym as well. Strength Training During the Second Trimester

September 2, 2014 by sumi Leave a Comment

I’ve written in my book, and in an earlier article on strength training during the first trimester, that pregnant women need to embrace exercise during and after their pregnancies.  With the help of social media, we’re seeing many admirable examples of women strength training during pregnancy.

In this article, ISSA certified personal trainer Sarah Conomacos (currently 27 weeks at the time of the photos), and owner at Q10 Fitness LLC helps us cover the topic of strength training during the second trimester of her pregnancy.

Sarah Conomacos

There are many possible benefits of strength training during pregnancy, including:

 1. Better energy and sense of well-being.
 2. Faster post-partum recovery and increased fitness for labor and delivery.
 3. Reduced discomfort from having strong muscles (e.g., pelvic floor and back).
 4. Decreased likelihood of varicose veins from improved overall circulation.
 5. Decreased risk of excessive weight gain, which can lead to stretch marks.
 6. Less water retention.
 7. More rapid return to your pre-pregnancy weight.

In this piece, we’re going to talk to Sarah to see how she incorporates strength training during her second trimester. Sarah has let her enthusiasm for fitness and sports as a child grow into a passion for the fitness lifestyle and helping others reach their healthy lifestyle goals.

My 5 Top Tips for Shedding the Post Baby Weight

August 19, 2014 by sumi Leave a Comment

So, by now,  you’re probably aware that I wrote an entire book on the subject of post-baby weight since I wanted to share EVERYTHING with you.

It took some time to lose the weight and get back in shape, but there were a handful of things I really focused on the months following my baby’s delivery. The following tips worked for me to get me from the before and after you see below.  Want to know what they are?

Sumi Singh Before and After Her Transformation

1. Listen to your doctor. Even if the doctor is confirming things you may already know, it’s important to have the go-ahead (or not!). For instance, although I had a super easy pregnancy, my labor and delivery was complicated and I had no choice but to have a C-section. My doctor was pleased that I was very fit through out my pregnancy but still cautioned me to wait the full 6 weeks before attempting anything too strenuous. That wasn’t easy advice to stomach, but 6 weeks is a blip in time compared to the many of years of training.

Two Stories from Two Busy Moms of Two

July 3, 2014 by sumi Leave a Comment

I recently ran a 7-week weight loss challenge that was open to over 50 contestants. Contestants included everyone from moms, powerlifters and other athletes, and busy working professionals. To my pleasant surprise, 2 of the top 5 winners were both young busy moms to multiple children. We all know the challenges that just one child brings insofar as scheduling the time to train, plan meals, and generally find “alone time.”  So, how do two busy nursing moms with several young children manage to lose weight during a fitness challenge?

Good nutrition AND exercise will help you get your pre-baby body back!

“NoMoreChubby” lost 9 lbs or 6.5% of her total bodyweight during the 7 weeks. “2TiredMama” lost 8.6 lbs or 5.4% of her total bodyweight during the same time period.  I asked them to answer some questions to help give other moms some insight into how these nursing lost weight, despite being so busy (and tired!).

I recently ran a 7-week weight loss challenge that was open to over 50 contestants. Contestants got to pick fun names, and the one gal who maintained a consistent lead through out the challenge was “Cielo Estrada.” Cielo lost 12.5% (15 lbs) of her total bodyweight, dropping from 120 lbs to 105 lbs over the course of the  7 week weight loss challenge.

Pregnancy and Post Partum Nutrition

June 11, 2013 by sumi Leave a Comment

I’ve safely trained others (and myself!) through healthy pregnancies, helping them with safe exercise choices throughout and after their pregnancies. I even wrote a book and DVD about it! But little is really known about optimizing nutrition for the active/exercising pregnant mom or the active/exercising nursing mom.

So I was thrilled to learn that a fellow mother and friend was also a Specialist in Maternal and Child Nutrition Education at the Texas Department of State Health Services.  Debbie Lehman, PhD, RD has also worked as a personal trainer,  and recognizes the importance of exercise during and after pregnancy.

Debbie Lehman, PhD, RD, LD, Nutrition Education Consultant at the Texas Department of State Health Services

Below is my interview with Dr. Lehman.

1. What are the most important things for a woman to include in her diet while pregnant?

The 40 weeks of pregnancy are a magical time for a woman and her family. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle before, during and after pregnancy is key for a healthy baby and mother. Ensure a healthy pregnancy by eating balanced meals with foods from all food groups, eat small frequent meals, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meats and beans, whole grains, and low-fat dairy. Also, try to cut down on fast foods, junk foods, sweets, soda and sweetened drinks, and drink plenty of water. A good plan is to fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, one fourth with lean protein, and one fourth with a whole grain. Then add a small low-fat dairy food or drink.

In addition to eating foods rich in nutrients, pregnant women are encouraged to check with a health-care provider because they may need a prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement to ensure they are consuming enough iron, folic acid and other important nutrients. It is also vital to avoid alcohol, tobacco and other harmful substances during your pregnancy.
